Hi Alan, hi rest of the linux world,

after updating our (smp) server to pre17 yesterday (because of hard
freezes under medium to high load), I discovered a serious problem
today with your actual tcp_input.c, which never happens before:
When trying to open a ftp-session with an atari-client (the tcpip
is an adaption of Phil Karn's k9q-package), ftp tells, the session
is closed by the remote peer, but tcpdump draws a different picture:

First the way it works normally:

19:06:31.286160 gizmo.lisa.de.1028 > lisa9.lisa.de.ftp:
 S 2197994895:2197994895(0) win 512 <mss 1460>
19:06:31.316160 lisa9.lisa.de.ftp > gizmo.lisa.de.1028:
 SP 2612250000:2612250060(60) ack 2197994896 win 4096 <mss 1024>
19:06:31.316160 gizmo.lisa.de.1028 > lisa9.lisa.de.ftp:
 . ack 1 win 32120 (DF)
19:06:31.336160 gizmo.lisa.de.1028 > lisa9.lisa.de.ftp:
 . ack 61 win 32120 (DF) [tos 0x10]

Now the pre17 version:

19:06:57.786160 lisa3.lisa.de.10235 > lisa9.lisa.de.ftp:
 S 2603775930:2603775930(0) win 512 <mss 1460>
19:06:57.806160 lisa9.lisa.de.ftp > lisa3.lisa.de.10235:
 SP 2678750000:2678750060(60) ack 2603775931 win 4096 <mss 1024>
19:06:57.806160 lisa3.lisa.de.10235 > lisa9.lisa.de.ftp:
 . ack 1 win 32120 (DF)
19:06:57.806160 lisa3.lisa.de.10235 > lisa9.lisa.de.ftp:
 R 2603775931:2603775931(0) win 0

After switching back to tcp_input.c.orig:

18:30:18.961281 lisa3.lisa.de.1170 > lisa9.lisa.de.ftp:
 S 3188666287:3188666287(0) win 512 <mss 1460>
18:30:18.991281 lisa9.lisa.de.ftp > lisa3.lisa.de.1170:
 SP 1988782704:1988782764(60) ack 3188666288 win 4096 <mss 1024>
18:30:18.991281 lisa3.lisa.de.1170 > lisa9.lisa.de.ftp:
 . ack 1 win 32120 (DF)
18:30:19.011281 lisa3.lisa.de.1170 > lisa9.lisa.de.ftp:
 . ack 61 win 32120 (DF) [tos 0x10]

...it's works again. May be, it's because the old tcp stuff,
but nothing like this happened before (now 6 years in
operation with loads of different unices). But if not,
you will hear from this problem again...

Another problem is a reproducible freeze, when
I try to turn on DMA on IDE (really bad idea):
hdparm -c1 -d1 -X34 -m16 /dev/...

ASUS DS97S, 2 * P2/300, 320 MB, ADAP 2940 UW
(extra Controller for external Mylex SUI 960 RAID)
3 * 3c905 (bonded), 2 * IBM MHDAE 8,4 IDE,...

By the way, the diskless linux workstations from this server
are running fine, only wine crashes regularly ;-)

But the server freezes make me VERY nervous.

I've heard of anti-freeze patches, I will try them the next
days. Would someone give me some links?

Thanks for your patience
