DHCP question

Hey all,

Just curious - is it theoretically possible to request an IP from a DHCP
server rather than just be assigned a random one? As well, once given an
X-day lease on an IP, is it possible to extend that lease by any means? I
hear of people doing that (the latter one), but I'm not sure how they've
done it - if at all :).
