But you are putting the packets on your own internal list, so you must
not free them until they are removed from that list and processed!

Freeing packets twice! Once in the top-level xmit function, and once again
in the slave_xmit function! Oopsie doopsies!
Alan's advice wasn't meant to literally apply to what you are doing.
