Hi all --- I have a WAN that previously functioned well and now,
I have one server that seems to have a one-way traffic jam. Any tips
for teens would be * gratefully * accepted!

Here is what I have (besides a headache):

CONF
-------------------------------------------------------------------
-- Slackware boxes (2.0.30 kernel), 4 of 'em, each a database server.
(Running postgresql which is significant as it uses tcp port 5432.)
-- A FreeBSD box (2.2.8) which delivers the mail.
-- A UnixWare box which is a database server (PROGRESS) and usually a
nuisance but cooperating these days.
-- 3com NICs (vortexes [595 10-100 PCI], boomerangs [905 PCI ], cyclones
[ 905b PCI ] and a slew of TPO 3c509b ISA cards in the workstations.)

ifconfig shows everybody up and not dropping packets. Most boxes talk
to each other and swap packets at a rate of 0.1 - 0.2 ms. The box
having trouble has a round trip time of 9ms (more or less) due to it's
distance from all of the other machines on the network.

SYMPTOMS
-------------------------------------------------------------------

0) Dialup connects to MACHINE A are clean (no hangups or dropped packets).

1) Once I dial in, I can telnet to any other box on the network. And
things happen fast (db queries, so on...as if I'm sitting at the box
I'm telnetted to...) So MACHINE A can connect - outbound - without
   dropping speed or packets.

2) I can telnet to MACHINE A from any local workstation and things are
   blisteringly quick.

3) YET, if I telnet into MACHINE A from any remote box (unix or windoze)
from any location (1 klick away or 10) then MACHINE A chokes. Even
PINE hangs until I kill the rlogin...

INTERVENTIONS
-------------------------------------------------------------------

0) Swapped out the whip - cut a new cat5 whip and terminated it.

1) Swapped out the NIC - stuck in a new Cyclone (3com 905b).

2) Power cycled the hub (3com superstack II).

3) Power cycled the (Cisco) router.

4) Built and loaded the latest Don Becker driver (3c59x.c).

5) Built and ran Becker's diagnostics.

RESULT: ()

FUTURE PLANS
-------------------------------------------------------------------

0) More Newcastle Brown Ale. Maybe a good single malt scotch...

1) Try another hub/diff port on the current hub.

2) Swap in another server - put current server on diff line to hub
altogether...compare results between the two servers at the same site.

Any ideas anyone? I am a SQL DBA so this sort of puzzle is tough for
me to troubleshoot (shooting from the hip, as it were...)
Output from ifconfig (nothing signigicant) attached...thanks!
