What kind of card are you using?  What kind of laptop?  And can you
include the relevant messages from /var/log/messages so we can see what's
happening?  I just went through this myself and got everything working
fine.  I had to tell the PCMCIA drivers not to assign IRQ5, which was used
by my laptop's internal sound hardware.  I also had to massage the
/etc/pcmcia/config file a little to get it to properly recognize a couple
of my el cheapo cards.
