hi list,

Am using mandrake (redhat 5.2) linux.
have a new router (Ascend 50) in my linux-intra-network and am having
2 little problems :

1. the router gets every 5 minutes a connection to wan. now i'm
looking for services, which causes this connections. I see an action
in tail -f /var/log/messages like this one :
May 27 09:01:00 mozart PAM_pwdb[3563]: (su) session opened for user news
by (uid
=9)
May 27 09:01:00 mozart PAM_pwdb[3563]: (su) session closed for user news
Mai 27 09:15:39 mozart PAM_pwdb[731]: (su) session closed for user
root

is it possible, that this action causes a connection to wan ?
Does anybody know, which services causes a not intendend connection ?
and
how I can detect it ? In other words : where I have to look for which
services, which are able to make connection to the router ?

2. have a little problem with define a gw (gateway) :
my router has an IP-Adress for example 192.168.1.1, my local-net is
a 192.168.1.0 and my linux-box has an IP-Adress of 192.168.1.10
Now I made an entry in the network-tool, in "Routing" :
Default Gateway = 192.168.1.1 (Network Packet Forwarding (IPv4))
but get an error-message like this :

/etc/rc.d/rc3.d/S10network reload
        *route: netmask 00000000 doesn't make sense with host route
        *Usage: route [-nNvee][FC][Adress_families] List kernel routing
tables
        * route {-V|--version} Display command version and exit
        * route {-h|--help}[Adress_family] Usage Syntax for
specified AF
        *       route [-v|][-FC]{add|del|flush} ... Modify routing table
for AF
        *
        * Address_families: inet,inet6,ddp,ipx,netrom,ax25
        *       specify AF: -A af1,af2.. or --af1 --af2 or af_route

cannot understand, what these messages means. How I have to declare the
router as a gateway in my network ?

Your help is very welcome, indeed.

Thank you very much
