Hi David

Please note that every new kernel tar ball also includes a file named
linux/Documentation/Changes.txt which documents what versions of what
software you need to have installed. If you had read this file, you would
have found that you were missing several packages on your setup. This is a
simple case of R-ing TFM. When you decide to upgrade to a newer kernel
(2.2.x or 2.3.x) you will run into a lot of compilation problems if you do
not have the correct version of certain packages installed. The Changes.txt
file also documents where to get the required upgraded packages.

Further - If I'm not mistaken - this kind of questions belongs on the
linux-kernel mailinglist, or on any linux-newbie/setup type of lists /
groups. (Not that me or most others on this list are unwilling to help - as
you may have seen to the large number of responses - but it just doesnt
quite belong here). This list is mainly for problems in networking (that's
why its called linux-NET), both in kernel and user land. Please dont regard
this message as having-been-written-by-an-disgruntled-man >:-( , but as a
friendly pointer ;-)

I probably have made the same mistake plenty of times before. Actually I
have even sent some questions to this list regarding networking, and not
received any replys at all (this is the disgruntled-man speaking a bit >:-(
but not at you of course :-)

Regards,
Alexander van Luijpen
