i think i fixed it (it's been up for 48 hours now without a slowdown). i killed
the gated as someone suggested and it was fine. 
i prefer the static ip address setup. i don't have to manually connect (my isp
requires -h xxxx for dhcp), and it's easier to setup. my ip is leased though,
so it'll always be the same unless they reorganize their network, and then
they'll tell me beforehand. i've got about the same network setup you do and
have had many people suggest that i go to a masqueraded firewalled setup
because our windoze machines are just asking to be cracked. i'd suggest you
look into it too (and it saves $7 a month off my bill).
