Hello.

I'm new to this list - and networking - and I don't know if this is the
right
place to pose this question, so please bear with me:

I want to connect my girlfriend's Win95OSRB Laptop ('Compaq')
to my Linux box (debian slink) ('Deus') in order to
        - have Deus serve as smtp/pop server (using qpopper/smail)
        - print on Deus (using samba)

I use a serial cable with sliplogin; after much ado I tricked win95 into
connecting.
Deus is not connected to the internet (only through cron'ed dialup to fetch

and send (her and my) mail). The local 'network' is 'leiden.nl'

Now the funny thing. After connecting, it is possible to ping between the
two
machines:
        ping deus
        ping deus.leiden.nl
        ping 192.168.0.2
        ping compaq
        ping compaq.leiden.nl
        ping 192.168.0.1
all work (to and fro). So the /etc/hosts file on both machines is ok I guess

But, telnetting (from the compaq) with win95 telnet.exe _does not_:
        telnet deus
        telnet deus.leiden.nl
        telnet 192.168.0.2
        telnet deus 110
etc, don't work!.

`Telnet localhost' on deus itself works perfectly.

I have read the NET-3 howto; /etc/hosts.allow, /etc/hosts.deny,
/etc/services
and /etc/networks seem to be correct. (ALLOWing all, defined localnet
192.168.0.0,
pop3 and telnet services running, in.telnetd ok)...

Does anybody have an idea of what is going wrong?
Do I need to run a nameserver?
Is there is any routing to be done?

MANY thanks in advance,

Felix Chang
