Don't bother with the overhead of diald for this, just put the ppp-up script in
/etc/inittab - eg. (from our gateway slackware box)

We have had the gateway configured like this for the last 3 1/2 years, with no
problems. Essentially, as soon as init notices that the connection has been
dropped, it is respawned. Downtime is on the order of 30 seconds including
redialing, and reconnecting (the process is respawned almost instantly). Make
sure that you add '-detach' to the end of your pppd parameters, otherwise pppd
will keep respawning over and over.
