I looked at the new libpcap and with a little inference, determined that
what I needed to do
was to use the SIOCGIFINDX ioctl to convert an interface name (eth1) to the
interface
number (3 in my case).
I should have realized that there would not be a direct correspondence
between eth1 <--> interface
since there might be other devices (such as ppp) in the mix.
