I had a similar problem where every so often my masq'd win 95 clients
will not be able to access internet at all and I'm using RH 6.0 kernel
2.2.5 One of things that seems to fix the problem temporarily was to
ping the 95 client from your gateway machine. 

Recently, I made the 95 client a DHCP client (I have my gateway as the
DHCP server for my home lan) and after that it has been working
flawlessly..
