It depends on what you are compairing it to...
A LRP box (www.linuxrouter.org) should be faster than a Cisco 25xx series,
though I doubt they could handle what a cisco 7xxx can.
If you are looking at T1 speeds, Linux is VERY fast, and ISA cards are
available to connect directly to the T1 line.
I am right now using a slackware box on a T1 line (School district
provided T1 line to the school, but the district does not have ANY
firewalls... we don't have any rights on the cisco 2506 router). The
computer is a 486dx2 66MHz with 16MB ram. Using reasonably extensive
IPchains rules, we get full speed routing, and the latency increase is
only about 1.5ms. This is using two 3c509 ethernet cards.
