I did the same thing <upgraded redhat 5.2 to 6.0> and had the same problem. I
do not remember the command, maybe someone reading this will know, but squid
includes a program that makes and prepares your cache files, and once I re-ran
that program squid was working again. Sorry that I cannot be more specific,
