NIC link beat?

On my newly installed Slackware 4.0 I found a message that I have never seen
before. In /var/log/messages there is the following line:

eth0: no link beat on the MII interface status then 7849 now 7849

what does that mean? This sort of a message also appears after I "halt" the
system. I have the SMC EtherPower (Tulip) NIC.
