Thanks Ed Nowicki [EMAIL PROTECTED] ********** *Initial Post ********** Help!: RH6.0 & pump-0.7.0-1.i386.rpm & DOXport 1000 Cable Modem Problem <scratch> I'm not sure what to try next, can someone help me? Configuration: RH 6.0 eth0: SMC EtherPower 8423BT (tulip) connected to cable modem (using pump) eth1: SMC EtherPower 8432BT (tulip) connected to LAN (192.168.1.1) pump-0.7.0-1.i386.rpm installed. *no* routing or gateway info entered name resolution search list configured as : hosts then dns Status: - ifconf reports vaild Dynamic IP Addr @ eth0 and 192.168.1.1 @ eth0 and local loopback (looks good) -eth0 & eth1 interfaces both come up(down) in startup(shutdown). - can ping to LAN and internet with any valid IP addresses. - /etc/resolv.conf is seeded with correct Name Server info from DHCP packet stuff. Problem: If i ping or go into netscrape with any URL that begins with www (i.e. www.dogpile.com) no name resolution occurs (i.e. netscrape times out). However if I type in (or ping) dogpile.com, I get vaild DNS resolution and get connected to the server. Any Ideas what's going on? Is there something I need with the routing or gateway stuff?? Am I just nutz? Thanks [EMAIL PROTECTED] ******** * Reply ******** > Any Ideas what's going on? > Is there something I need with the routing or gateway stuff?? I wouldn't think so... > Am I just nutz? Sounds likely.... :-) What does your /etc/resolv.conf file look like after it is built by your DHCP client? Have you tried playing around with nslookup to understand what is going on? -Tom ******** * Reply ******** ( cat /etc/resolv.conf >> this 2>> thisfile ) search msns.leh.ptd.net leh.ptd.net ptd.net nameserver 204.186.0.201 nameserver 204.186.0.202 nameserver 24.229.12.230 ( nslookup snap.com >> thisfile 2>> thisfile ) Server: dns1.ptd.net Address: 204.186.0.201 Non-authoritative answer: Name: snap.com Addresses: 206.132.166.63, 206.132.166.68, 206.132.166.69, 206.132.166.61 206.132.166.62 ( nslookup www.snap.com >> thisfile 2>> thisfile ) Server: dns1.ptd.net Address: 204.186.0.201 *** dns1.ptd.net can't find www.snap.com: No response from server ( nslookup yahoo.com >> thisfile 2>> thisfile ) Server: dns1.ptd.net Address: 204.186.0.201 Non-authoritative answer: Name: yahoo.com Addresses: 204.71.200.243, 204.71.200.245 ( nslookup www.yahoo.com >> thisfile 2>> thisfile ) Server: dns1.ptd.net Address: 204.186.0.201 *** dns1.ptd.net can't find www.yahoo.com: No response from server ******** * Reply ******** Pretty amazing. Are you only seeing this from systems in the 192.168.1.0 network or do you see it from the Linux gateway as well? Also, do you have any firewall rules defined on the gateway? FWIW, I just connected to dns1.ptd.net and was able to resolve www.yahoo.com so the problem doesn't occur on that NS. -Tom -- ******** * Reply ******** I issued all commands from the linux console (the one with eth0 & eth1). I have a dual boot on this computer W95/RH6, in W95 I have no dns problems. Listed below are some of my network settings. I used a windows utility (winipcfg) to find my ISPs gateway addr and tried shoving it in the default gateway setting below. Any ideas? Do you want to try to telnet to my machine.
