We have the same experience, connected to a cisco catalyst switch.
"made in taiwan" won't work, older versions (in our case) "made in UK"
do work.

Connecting the taiwan model to a no-brand ethernet hub and then to the
switch works but you loose full-duplex capability.
We since then switched to eepro cards, slighty more expensive but
if "god" himself uses them, you know they will allways be well supported ;-)))
