It is real easy. First, edit /etc/inittab, and add a line like this:
D1:2345:respawn:/sbin/mgetty ttyS1
This assumes you want to be able to dial in when in run levels 2 through
5, and that the modem is connected to /dev/ttyS1. If you don't want to
allow logins for a run level, remove the number for that run level from
between the first and second :. I am also assuming that the mgetty
package is installed, or you know how to install it.
The next step is to edit the mgetty config files for your modem. On
a Red Hat system, they are in /etc/mgetty+sendfax. On other systems,
they may be in /etc/default, or in the /usr/local tree. You will
probably want to edit the login.conf file to work with your modem.
(It will not require many changes, and in fact may wourk "out of
the box" for you.)
After you get the modem hooked up, and the files modified, send a
SIGHUP to inittab to tell it you changed it's config file, and test
things out.
This should get you started. Post or write me when you have specific
questions.
