What is the best general way to remotely monitor the load on a server?
I want to write something simple that will allow me to determine the
relative loads of a set of servers (for the purpose of leveling), but I
don't want to be tied down to a single service (e.g. http) and I don't
want to use SNMP.
I thought about timing ICMP request/response pairs but I'm not sure how
well that will reflect total load. Any suggestions?
