I've seen pppd questions on this list before so I'm hoping this is relevant
enough. If not, please inform me in private e-mail ([EMAIL PROTECTED])

I am having a problem where I am ALWAYS getting dropped after the first time
I connect to the Ascend router at work via a USR modem on my Linux box. I
almost always stay connected the second time. I thought it might be an INIT
string issue as /var/log/messages simply said connection terminated. But
have something else going on that I wanted an answer for and I wondered if
it was related:

When I watch the processes list as it connects I see the ifup-ppp process
always goes defunct each time it dials.

Is this normal?

[ps -ef|grep ppp output modified for e-mail - all processes belong to root]

612 611 0 21:22 ? 00:00:00 /sbin/ppp-watch ifcfg-ppp0
632 612 0 21:22 ? 00:00:00 /sbin/ppp-watch ifcfg-ppp0
683 632 1 21:23 ttyS1 00:00:00 /usr/sbin/pppd -detach lock mode
689 683 0 21:23 ? 00:00:00 [ifup-ppp <defunct>]

The problem with this theory is, that the defunct process is present on each
connect, and disappears only when pppd is started which is usually the
second successful connect.

Thank you.
