There is a nss_wins.tar.gz tarball floating somewhere (www.google.com gives
1st hit). It creates a shared object that can be inserted
(/etc/nssswitch.conf) to provide name resolution using WINS/SMB.
You'll need samba sources to compile it.
BTW I recall this package was developed in Solaris so I guess you'll
have to hack a bit 8)
