Broken socket

Good day
I thought there was a conversation some time back about testing for a
broken socket ie. link down.  I thought about the exceptfds field in
select but the docs say:

`exceptfds'
     the set of FDs to examine for exceptional status (note: errors are
     *not* exceptional statuses)

Anyone have anything on this subject.
