The answer to that is "it depends".

It depends on what version of DNS you are running on NT. At one
time (and Microsoft CLAIMS to have fixed this) Microsoft was adding some of
its infamous proprietary extensions to the DNS protocol (alleged to have
something to do with WINS communication) that was breaking all non-Microsoft
DNS servers that tried to zone-xfer. By breaking, I mean that the
non-Microsoft server got the illegal record and refused to transfer the
zone from the primary to the secondary (master to the slave in current
Bind 8.2 parleyance).

If you get it to work it will be as reliable as your master, which
is to be expected. I wouldn't personally go near a Windows DNS server
(master or slave) and I'm the POC for close to 100 different domains and
networks (all legit, with real zone files - no cybersquatting). Your
reliability will be determined by the reliablity of your NT DNS server
(which sucks - IMNSHO).

When I say it sucks it's because I expect services like this to
be reliable. I expect them to run for months or years without crashing
and burning. I've had Linux and Solaris boxes meet that routinely. Similar
services on NT under load just don't cut the mustard. We had an entire
VPN go out regularly due to a brain-fart in our NT based PKI server. Now
it gets reset daily! Same thing goes with other services that people have
made the mistake of mounting on NT only to discover that they won't run
for long periods under production load. Couple of cases the only real
solution is to replace the NT boxes with Unix boxes (pick your flavor).
Even Microsoft found that out with their own DNS servers, HotMail, and
MSNBC where each was tried on NT and then reverted back to Unix.

If you can't get it to work, try getting the latest code from
Microsoft and complain to them. They're the ones that are deliberately
creating these problems with their "embrace and extend" policy (see
Halloween documents).
