I'm not sure whether this is implemented in any other platform than ALPHA
(I red somewhere about the alpha versions, there surely must be intel
somewhere)...   Did you ever think about perhaps redundant networking ?
IP-AT, or IP / MAC Address take overs ? 

Theres some nice software out for it that monitors NICs and use a "spare"
NIC in the machine to takeover either the IP, or MAC address of the failed
NIC should it happen.
