NIS shouldn't be too bad on the security front these days, should it?
Assuming you don't allow access to the NIS servers from outside your site
(using tcp wrappers, and/or ypserv.{conf,securenets}), and use shadow
passwords. It's probably also an idea to deny access to untrusted/unsecured
machines, e.g. Win9[58] boxes.
