ethernet and tcp checksum

Hi

I have a couple of questions - 

1) What does the ethernet device do when it gets a packet with bad CRC?

2) Whats the purpose of the TCP checksum? Is it because TCP can make no assumption 
about the underlying device? (It could be SLIP, which does not do its own checksum).
