Yes I looked at this project with envious eyes too as we have a similar
one underway.
We have worked on the philosophy that the students (kids!) won't really
be trashing the email server continuously but rather in bursts. (Morning
interval, lunch, IT periods etc...) and you should be able to get away with
one (or two) good servers on good (read fast) linux boxes and a separate one
for the staff. One good server for 24,000 users where the say 5% 1000 or so
may attack say popd servers to RECOVER their mail at any one stage and only
10 to 20 will SEND mail messages at any one instance (assuming sendmail).
I am assuming that the email messages don't include massive images everytime!!
If this is insufficient under pressure then perhaps placement of mail servers
in assessed heavy user schools. Eventually you will end up with an
ECONOMICALLY and LOAD SPECIFIED number of mail servers!!! Which should be
cheaper and easier to manager than 60 mail servers...
