Gated related questions.

Hi,
 I am trying to find out if the Linux source code could be suitably
adapted for customizing to the networking needs and how this would be
different to what Gated offers. Presently Gated (gated.org) offers
routing solutions for almost all routing protocols and it is
significantly costlier. I would appreciate if someone could throw some
light on this. Thanks in advance.
