i use a commercial product called emumail (www.emumail.com) which can talk
IMAP even though it was designed for POP3. It is perl so can run on just
about any system. use mod_perl or fastcgi though to cut down on the
overhead of loading perl all the time. I have been to busy to watch
developments on it for the last few months but when I installed it the
middle of last year the IMAP support was improving rapidly.
