Linux Kernel Internals, was a good book. Unfortunately, it has gotten
out of date, esp. since it mostly covers the 2.0 series of kernels.

I just paged through the Linux Kernel Commentary book and my general
impression of it is that it's great start. It was meant to be the
Lions of Linux, but Lions was much more thorough. (Then again, Lions
only had around 9000 lines of code to deal with...) The reason why the
Commentary book is so thick is that it has a complete print out of the
2.2.5 kernel in it. The commentary portion is 150 wide pages. For
US$40 it's a good buy.
