Hi,

I have a problem on a small network that I maintain. The ISP for the
ADSL feed has just changed over from static IP to dhcp and no matter
what I have tried to get a dhcp client , the connection is unstable.

The DSL conection goes direct to the linux server on eth1, and all
workstations are set up to use the server as a proxy for _all_ services.
The internal network uses static IP's in the 10.1.1.x range and the
linux server connects to the workstations via eth0.

The symptoms are:

I can establish a connection by 'dhcpcd -d -t 60 -l 86400 eth1' and the
DSL router, which appears to double as a dhcp server, allocates an IP -
dhcpcd prints 'Your IP is 192.168.254.2' or similar and a lease is
granted in /etc/dhcpc/ that looks to be correct.

All works well for a varying amount of time, and then the connection
appears to die. 'ps aux' shows a dhcpcd process sleeping, but 'dhcpcd
-k' replies 'no dhcpcd process is running'.

Rebooting the DSL router and associated modem brings up the connection
again, but it never stays up for long.

The ISP only offers support for Whinedoze, so I'm on my own here, with
an unhappy client who is fed up of rebooting the DSL boxes.

The situation is made more difficult, since the company needs the
internal network up in order to function. The first opportunity I have
to go to single user mode or to reboot is Saturday.

Any pointers that anyone can give me would be gratefully received.

TIA,
Dave
