Hi,

I'm pretty new to Linux, and I'm struggling to sort out a dial-up problem.
So, I joined this list in the hope someone can be helpful.

I have a P11 366 MHz, 64 MHz RAM.

My hard drive is partitioned, with Win98 on the first partition and RH6.0 on
the rest.

I was running Winlinux 2000 before on the same machine. Under Winlinux, I
could get a connection to my ISP using KPPP, but I was not able to connect
to any domains, only IP numbers (this was with a proper /etc/resolv.conf
file). I then switched to pppsetup (advice from my ISP), and this solved the
problem.

I have since repartitioned my drive, and installed an unofficial version of
RH6.0. (The company who made the cdrom said it's identical to the official
one).

I set up kppp, got a connection to my ISP, but it won't resolve names (this
seems to be a common problem with kppp). I switched to pppsetup, kwvdial,
and other programmes designed to modem hook-up to an ISP. They all behaved
in the same way: a connection is established, but no domains.

I tried to debug the connection, but there's too little info to help.

I then found out that I can in fact connect to only ONE IP address: the
third option my ISP gave me as a nameserver. The other two preferred options
does not work, neither does several other nameservers elsewhere in the
world, or any other IP address for that matter.

I tried to ping all the nameserver IP addresses I had on hand - none of them
returned anything. But I was still connected to my ISP, and I could call up
nameserver option three with Netscape. But I could not ping this nameserver.

I have been corresponding with our local LUG (in South Africa), but nobody
seems to be able to help.

I have no idea what the problem could be. I know too little about pppd, I
don't even know if the above situation points to a problem with pppd, or
something missing in my network setup (I have no network setup).

I have edited every single configuration file that could even remotely be
relevant, I have upgraded pppd, but no luck.

I think the problem lies deeper. Could someone help?

tia,

Hendrik Martin
