CGI on apache server

I use Redhat 6.0 which runs apache-1.3.6-7.
When I load cgi, the script is displayed instead of the desired html output.
I checked the option 'execute cgi script automatically" in apache 
configuration of linuxconf.
What else I have to do if the cgi is to be executed properly?
