There's actually a network tool called nmap, normally used to scan your local network
for
IPs (active) and for security holes. It's illegal of course to run it against anything
outside your own network. It can be downloaded at www.insecure.org, which also has
security alerts about various OSes that can be patched to avoid someone from getting
into
your systems through a known security hole.
