Thanks! My bad.
It was just wierd because it worked fine for a while, then stopped, even
though they hadn't done the changover yet (so it shouldn't have been
trying to use the aliased devices). I would have expected it to start
failing immediately instead of hours later, but perhaps it was a cache
thing.
