route problem

I've screwed up something in my route table.
Now when I run route it lists eth0, loopback, default gateway and then
stops.
It never returns.
I saw this once before when I added an erroneous entry to the table.
The problem went away when I deleted the entry.
I've tried deleting everything I'd added to the table but to no avail.
