How to specify url for a linux machine

I specified linux.bflsoftware.com as domain name in 'netcfg' but i am
unable to 'ping -c4 linux.bflsoftware.com'. If i ping the IP then it is
OK. I have specified DNS in netcfg. Will my machine send name->IP entry
request to the DNS or i have to request concerned person to manually
make this entry in DNS table.
