you do not modify crontab by editing etc/crontab run the command crontab
-e and then write your cron job. after that if you run crontab -l you'll
see the cron job you've written. If you still want to use your usual
editor say pico use export VISUAL=pico before you run crontab -e because
by default it opens vi as the editor.

If you do not put 1> /dev/null 2> /dev/null in your cron job it will send
you or whoever owns the cron job mail whenever it executes.
