Hi there everyone, I haven't received an e-mail from the Linux Admin
list for three days, and I didn't get the message that I just sent there
... is anyone else here su*bscribed to both and if so have you had a
similar experience? Here's the message I sent there, maybe one of you
can help?

Okay, I've done something silly somewhere.

I was playing around with security on a non-production test server,
running a password crack utility on my password file and using pwconv
and pwunconv to test different modes, etc.

Now the standard user login "mear" (that's me), won't authenticate. I
can only log in as root, and it still doesn't allow "mear" to log in
after changing the password.

/var/log/messages shows the following after a failed login attempt:

login[921]: FAILED LOGIN 1 FROM (null) FOR mear, Authenication service
cannot retrieve authentication file.

When I cat /etc/passwd, it shows the other user accounts on the server
as being encrypted, but not mear, or another test user account I created
to see if that would work. The other users can log in fine.

Oh, and there is no /etc/shadow file either.

I've tried searching for authentication stuff at the Linux Documentation
Project, but nothing I've found so far matches this problem, so I
approach you, my esteemed colleagues, for the kick in the pants I truly
deserve. ;-)

Regards,
