I'm trying to set up a means of synchronizing my two
computers' clocks (one running OS/2, the other linux) via
the lan. I have the OS/2 program "time868" configured to
synchronize the OS/2 machine's clock with the NIST time
server on the internet when the OS/2 machine dials in to
collect news and mail. So far so good. Time868 has a
"server" option, which in theory should allow me to use
rdate on the linux machine to synchronize with the OS/2
machines clock. Rdate appears to only work with tcp, so I
configured time868 to use tcp in server mode.
Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work with tcp; I get a
"connection refused" error with both rdate and if I try to
connect to the server using the loopback interface on the
OS/2 machine. If I configure time868 to use udp, I can
connect to the server through the loopback interface, but
linux' rdate doesn't seem to support udp.
So, how can I either 1) configure my OS/2 system to use tcp
for the time server, or 2) get linux to use udp to contact
the OS/2 timeserver?

I am having a problem with Communicator 4.5 for Linux (RedHat 5.2) while
working off-line. Netscape freezes when it tries to check the mail
from my pop server (from my ISP). When I shut off the automatic mail
check
I don't seem to have a problem, but when I open Netscape without
a ppp conection and attemp to re-read old messages by clicking on the
little
mail icon, Netscape locks up. I have been looking in the
/var/log/messages
file and here are some of the messages that I am getting every so often
(not for any particular reason that I can see - I get these when I am
connected
or not to ppp):

I think that I have an overactive named running here - this is a named
configuration
issuer? I am not getting any of the usual message popups from netscape
simply telling my that the there is a DNS lookup error. I am also
experiencing lockups with webpages that I am viewing after I have closed
the ppp connection and accidentally click on a link - I don't get the
error popup message, it just locks up. Could someone please tell me what
the problem seems to be?
Thank you,

permission stuff should be held in the following files:
o /etc/hosts
o /etc/hosts.allow
o /etc/hosts.deny
add something like ALL:ALL to hosts.allow and you should prolly be in
business.
note: ALL:ALL may not be the best 'cuase it lets everybody in. if you're
just going to use the one other box substitute the ip addy....
a complete idiot,

Do I need an IP masq module for ssh? I have a machine
that is forwarded through my linux box, and SSH seems
not to work to any host. (I haven't tried
from the linux box itself, because I don't have SSH
installed on it.) The linux box is slackware 3.4,
kernel 2.0.34.
Thanks,

Hello,
I got my RH 5.2 running with Ensoniq PCI sound card. I have the alsa
sound driver works fine. Both X11amp and Realaudio can produce sound
out. But the RealAudio heavily load my CPU (K6-166 overclocked to 200).
The audio is interrupted everytime I change to another window , or
browsing within Netscape. I got the CPU load monitor fire up and it
seems the CPU is fully occupied! I don't think it's the CPU problem 'cos
I don't have problem with X11amp, also the Realaudio (not G2) in Windows
in the same machine. Is that a fact or just my system doing weird!?

In kernel 2.0.35 (probably for all 2.0.x) taken from the file

So the answer would be 256 by default, but can be changed with sysctl.

What distribution are you using?
Slackware do a "netconfig"
Redhat 5.x do a "linuxconf" in X of course.
Other distros: well basically the IP address is set with the "ifconfig"
command. You must update the /etc/hosts and routing tables to reflect
this. If you are using a recent version of this then maybe "netcfg".
Try them all, one will work!

Open the Network Configurator tool ( netcfg). Open the "routing" box,
enable the option, save and close.
Done.

Subject: 2.2.0 All network ports in use.
Date: 27 Jan 1999 13:57:08 -0600
I tried upgrading from kernel 2.0.36 to kernel 2.2.0 today. Base
distribution was a Slackware 3.4 system.
Everything seemed to run O.K. at first. Then I noticed that I couldn't
telnet into the box without getting the message "All network ports in
use."
I'm guessing that the ttyxx devices are no longer used for telnetd and
that I need to create new devices in /dev (or else upgrade my telnetd).
But, I haven't been able to find anything in the 2.2.0 Documentation to
suggest exactly what it is I need to do.
Apologies in advance if this is a FAQ, but I haven't been following the
2.1.x kernels and so may have missed the structure changes which have
been going on. Any assistance will be appreciated. A FAQ for upgrading
to the 2.[1,2].x kernels would be ideal. Does such a thing exist?

Subject: Invalid ICMP Error???
Date: Wed, 27 Jan 1999 15:06:42 -0500
Hi folks.. I just installed the new 2.2.0 kernel on my RH5.2 machine,
and i'm getting a message 'aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd send an invalid ICMP error to
a broadcast' popping up 2 or 3 per second. I was just wondering if
anybody knew what this error message means.
I have a Cisco router, T1 line and a Class C of IP's. my Linux box is
on 1 of the IP's from my class C. on the serial interface for my Cisco
we have a .252 network of 4 IP's... .16 .17 .18 and .19.... The .18 is
my router, and the .17 is my ISP's router... the invalid ICMP error
message is coming from the .17 or my ISP's router.
I was just wondering if anybody knew what this message was, and how I
could isolate what was causing it.
Thanks,
Bill

Subject: dial-on-demand probs (again)
Date: Wed, 27 Jan 1999 00:50:50 -0500
Hello,
I am still having problems with dial-on-demand and was hoping that someone
here could help me. I downloaded the latest kernel that I could find
(2.2.0-pre9) and also the latest ppp sources (2.3.5). First, I tried to
run 'make kernel' in the ppp source directory, but all components were
skipped, because the ones in the kernel source directory were more recent.
Then I compiled the kernel (make config;make dep;make clean;make
bzImage;make modules;make modules_install then doing the lilo
configuration stuff, then, in the ppp source directory 'make;make
install'). The kernel runs OK (except for the fact that the
printer and IP masquerading doesn't work), but I can't get dial-on-demand
to work.
My configuration file for pppd looks like that:
lock
defaultroute
noipdefault
modem
/dev/ttyS1
57600
crtscts
debug
passive
asyncmap 0
name "fiedler"
ipcp-accept-local
ipcp-accept-remote
0.0.0.0:10.10.10.10
demand
connect "/usr/sbin/chat -v -f /etc/ppp/pppscript"
When I run pppd with this file, it just sits there like a dead frog. The
output to /var/log/messages is rather short:
Jan 27 00:06:59 CaveMaus pppd[209]: pppd 2.3.5 started by root, uid 0
Jan 27 00:06:59 CaveMaus pppd[209]: Using interface ppp0
Jan 27 00:06:59 CaveMaus pppd[209]: Exit.
That's all.
My 'normal' ppp configuration file looks like this:
lock
defaultroute
noipdefault
modem
/dev/ttyS1
57600
crtscts
debug
passive
asyncmap 0
name "fiedler"
and it runs quite nicely (except for the IP masquerading - but I don't
think the reason for that lies here).
Could anybody please tell me what I'm doing wrong?
TIA,
Juergen

Hi, I still havent succeeded, I was advised to add
this to my /etc/hosts:
order hosts, bind
multi on
I also tried to add it to the /etc/resolv.conf.
I checked /etc/nsswitch.conf, no it's got:
networks: files dns
hosts: files dns
I tried to add [NOTFOUND=return] in that file, I
even deleted the file, nothing happens, still if
I want to ping a local ip address listed in /etc/hosts
it raises the internet connection with diald.
What else could I try ?

Create these files in /etc/postip/ replacing the area between ** with your
specific information
You can put them anywhere, just make sure you change all the references, and
that you have
sufficient rights to read/write the ip text file.
# File -- postip
rm /etc/postip/iproute.txt
/sbin/ifconfig eth1 | grep inet | awk '{print $2}' | awk -F : '{print $2}'
> /etc/postip/iproute.txt
/usr/bin/ftp -n *FTPSite* < /etc/postip/ipscript
###
# File -- ipscript
user *username* *password*
del /filename.txt
bin
put /etc/postip/iproute.txt /filename.txt
close
###
then add a cron event running
/etc/postip/postip
every 5 - 15 minutes.... :)

Treat the cable modem just like an ethernet segment.

I use a Redhat 5.1 server for gateway Internet access using IP Masq.
Everything works great until the Internet connection drops. Then it
takes either a veeery long tim to get a login porpt in a telnet session
or it jsut times out. What's the deal? I suspect it might have
something to do with DNS lookups but I am somewhat of a newbie and would
know how to fix it.
