You will never "ensure that the page ends up looking exactly
how you intended it to" because HTML isn't a layout language.
Although most 'web designers' seem to think that.

Caldera has released several pieces which have made their way into most if
not all distributions. In Debian, for example, there are ipx and ncpfs
packages. The Caldera distribution clearly leads in this area. You should
be able to find a variety of on-line documentation (HOWTOs and FAQs) related
to these basic functions.

It's not as complete a system as you might like -- certainly nothing like
what you would find in OS/2, for example -- but may well be adequate for
the normal user.

After 3 months of trying, I finally got samba up and running between my
linux and win95 box.

Now i'm going to be greedy and ask a question --

Can I set up samba so that ANYBODY can log in with no (blank) password and
have super user access to the entire system? In other words, none of my
linux accounts have passwords and I'd like samba to have NO security.

I have no security issues since my cat is not a very good typist...

Thanks!

Francisco,
   Look at the man for smbpasswd. Also verify the encryption
side of smb in cmb.conf. In the long haul it may be better to
change the Linux side as the changing the MS side will probably
cause other MS things to go wrong.
   Have you mapped the drives on the MS side? It sound like they
are mapped but not on line at the moment. Can you click on my
computer and have a drive tag for the smb drive? Does it have a
red x at its bottom?
   Have you added the drives in smb.conf like was done for the
printer?  Are they public?
   What is security and what is encrypt passwords?
   What is the exact operation you do to get access on the MS
side? What is the exact error message?

My ISP gave me the following settings:

ip address: 10.160.16.42
      mask: 255.255.255.248
   gateway: 10.160.0.1

Under windows 98 if I use these settings I am able to get to the net.

If under Linux I use these settings the linux box cant even ping 10.160.0.1

I did a netstat -r under windows 98 to see what routes it was using and I got
this

Does anyone know what routes I need to do to linux to get it to do the same
thing as windows98?

Under linux I can ping myself and another 98 box connected as 10.160.16.43 so
I'm assuming that all is well with the network card etc.

Thanks in advance

All it needed was ipcp-accept-local in the options file. Guess I should
read the man pages once in a while. :)

This can be done, but not without getting additional software for
the Win98 box. If you do have the choice, put the modem onto
the Linux box and have your Win98 box going through the Linux
system instead (with IP-forwarding/IP-masquerading) . If the present
setup can't be changed, you'll need to get a proxy for the Win98 box
since Win9* doesn't do routing/forwarding at all.

Linux isn't like Windows; it's a multiple-user system. If you don't log in
at the console, that has no impact on anything else going on. So just throw
the monitor out the window, stomp on the keyboard, you're good to go.

Yes, if you have a supported PCMCIA card this is easily possible.
The card will behave like any other serial modem. I've used this
with an Xircom Ethernet/Modem card.
For PCMCIA cards, see
http://hyper.stanford.edu/HyperNews/get/pcmcia/home.html
Just look at the supported cards, and watch out for winmodem-cards.

They are probably just little hacks that do not know anything. They are
running some cheese telnet login deamon (I have seen many) and then your
system kicks them off after a few attempts and then they think that
their software sucks or something (I would not know about failed
attempts ;-). If you are worried just ad the ips to your
/etc/hosts.deny list or turn off telnet all together in the
/etc/inetd.conf file.

Generic info for RH 5.2. Assumption: you installed PPP.
===================================================================
RH puts ppp scripts in /usr/doc/ppp-2.3.5
Copy ppp-on, ppp-on-dialer, options to /etc/ppp.
Copy /dev/null into options.
===================================================================
Modify ppp-on by editing the following:
TELEPHONE, ACCOUNT, PASSWORD
==================================================================
For exec command. put in correct device probably
cua1 (for RH5.2) and modem speed
===================================================================
Edit /etc/resolv.conf and put in ISP nameserver given you by your
ISP.
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
You usually get two from your isp.
====================================================================
execute ppp-on & and monitor logs with
tail -f /var/log/messages.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
OR:
Control Pannel: Modem configuration.  Select
correct device. (used in ppp-on script)
===================================================================
Control Pannel: Network Configurator: Routing: Defaults blank
PPP0 will use this so needs a blank here.
===================================================================
Network Configurator: Names: insert ISP
nameserver addresses.
===================================================================
System Configurator: PPP/SLIP/PLIP:  Configurations, Add
Fill in Hardware, Communication. Assumes PAP not
required - If things do not work check with ISP.
==================================================================
Save quit. Verify /etc/resolv.conf has your ISP
addresses.
==================================================================
The linuxconf sets up most things but does not
setup the ppp-on script - that must be done by hand.
==================================================================
Testing:
cd /etc/ppp
execute ppp-on
Ping locally between your network machines to insure your ok.
Ping some net address by ip number like 10.220.10.120. Once ppp
is connected.
Verify your name server working, ping boston.com or do an
nslookup microsoft.com
When not dialed in ping someother box locally by name
to insure yor local resolution is working say if
done by the /etc/hosts and /etc/lmhosts.

I've the same problem. But I try to connect to an AIX-Unix-System with
SAMBA-shares.
I previously asked about it in the newsgroups, but the only answer I got
was that I should try to recompile the smbmount-source.
... It didn't work....
If you find something out, please tell me about it.

The probably better way is to add following lines to /etc/conf.modules:

alias ppp-compress-21   bsd_comp
alias ppp-compress-24 ppp_deflate # From original RFC draft
alias ppp-compress-26   ppp_deflate     # Final standard per ppp-2.3.4
README

This way the modules can be loaded on demand and unload if they are no
longer used.

Not just any cable. A "NULL MODEM" or "CROSS-OVER" cable is required if you
don't use a hub.

Else, those little electrons never get there.

You can make your own with a crimp kit, or buy one for about the same price as a
crimp tool and 100' of cable.

My fix works if you have the ethernet drivers built into the kernel.
You must have to load the modules yourself. There is an ethernet
HOWTO at http://129.173.21.99/Ethernet-HOWTO.html#toc3 which
will show you how to do it. Or you could recompile the kernel as I
did and put the drivers into the kernel.

I have run into the same problem a few weeks ago.
After sponsoring our Austria Telekom by trying out various pppd options
(unsuccessfully), I realized that the kernel was unable to find (or load)
the ppp-compression modules:

If you insert them manually by calling
modprobe ppp_deflate; modprobe bsd_comp
everything works fine. (at least it worked for me).

Good luck

Hello World,

 Lately I have noticed a very different kind of scan. That is people
seems like is keep trying to 'telnet' to my box, but always 3-4 times in
a row... First couple time, I think people just want to telnet in... but
after 2 weeks and the pattern is pretty consistent then I start
wondering what is going on. And btw, does anyone know what are the L, S,
I, F and T stands for?

Derek
