I haven't had experience specifically with IMP, but it looks like you have
a password set for that DB user and haven't told it a password. Try adding
--password=whatever to where it calls your sql app.

PPP was working on an SuSE 6.2 box but died...

The same setup still works on an SuSE 6.1 box. I have checked everything
I can think of but CHAP authentication fails on the 6.2 box - see
attached log.

Any suggestions? (Yes, I have checked and double-checked
/etc/ppp/chap-secrets, permissions, etc.)

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I am trying to move from a working, static ip router configuration
runnning on win98 (Winproxy) to linux.
I have duplicated the route table from win98 to linux, but can't even
ping
the gateway. My lan hosts ping fine.
The ifconfigs for the nics look good (I think).
There must be additional steps, but I seem to be stuck (and lame).

Appreciate any assist.

Yes, I should have mentioned that the clients are Win95 (not
my choice). I have set up Samba to simply share files, but
what I was wondering is if you can set it up as a domain
controller Win95 clients.

Thank you for all the help so far.

Use the pppd option user <logon name> instead. If pppd is invoked by
a non-root user then name <login name> can only be used in one of the
privileged option files, e.g., /etc/options.

My resolv.conf looks like this -

nameserver 198.077.179.003
nameserver 192.239.016.129

Those are the ips for my ISP's primary and secondary nameserver, and
they work just fine under my other Linux install.

Also, another reason I don't think there is a problem with my
resolv.conf is that the route command shows that I am setting up a
proper route. I get a default route to the ISP's gateway address. But
nothing seems to get through. I am able to get online with a different
install using KPPP. Right now I have 2 Linux installations on my
machine, and they both are identical except that one is using KPPP and
the other is using netcfg to get the ppp up and running. I've been
comparing the two and have yet to figure out why the one works and the
other doesn't.

Well I would consider getting some MCSE study books, finding a place that
will give you some good hands on experience and learning everything you can
possibly find out about:

TCP/IP
Networking Concepts
Hardware troubleshooting
Software troubleshooting
NT 4.0
Novell

Study for like A+ maybe it'll get you in the door into some more advanced
jobs. Read anything you can find and you'll do fine I'm sure. Good luck!

I am running RH6.0 with an ISA PnP SupraExpress 33.6 modem and a
Logitech serial mouse. My internet connection works fine under Win95,
but crawls at the speed of an injured slug under Linux. The speed does
improve when I wiggle the mouse very quickly, but not to its full
potential.

I posted this problem here and got the response that I have an IRQ
problem - the mouse on COM1 and the modem on COM3 (thankyou for the
tips, by the way).

I do not know how to fix the problem.

Can I change the COM port of the modem very easily? Would it require
changes to isapnp.conf only? I tried using the modemtool application,
just for kicks, but there is obviously more to it than that. Are there
BIOS settings required to change the COM port of the modem?

I am at a loss for how to procede. If anyone could sum up the process
for me, or just point me in the right direction (URLs or whatever), I
would be greatly appreciative and think only good thoughts of that
person(s) for the rest of the year!

Thanks!!!

Subject: a small problem with loop back routes
Date: Sun, 19 Sep 1999 15:22:20 +1000

Hi,

I was trying to get my new linux box connecting with ppp to my ISP. I
used netconf (redhat 6) to do this. I put in the phone number and set up
the script which reads "username:" and sends your username back etc etc
etc. I also set the DNS servers IP addresses in /etc/resolv.conf.

However, when I connected (and I did connect okay), I could ping my server
assigned IP address, but I couldn't ping my loop back address (127.0.0.1).
I ran a "route" command and it only showed two entries, one for the server
assigned IP and one for the default gateway. I could connect to the
internet fine then. So, I ran this command to try and get the 127.0.0.1
address in the route tables, and I also checked that ifconfig lo was okay.
I ran "route add -net 127.0.0.1" but all I got back was "SIOCADDRT:
Invalid argument". Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong and help me
fix it up so networking is normal? Thanks.

NB, 127.0.0.1 was in the /etc/hosts file as per normal.

Thanks

Not real sure but this maybe something to try - are you using the "net
init" command? Also you probaly need to use the "net logon" command to log
onto the dos box. If you've got it working in Win95 without encrypted
passwords it should work with dos - it's just a matter of getting the login
name right - I think.

Subject: Diald + firewalling? Need help.

I'm trying to configure a firewall that connects to the outside world
using diald. Specifically I'm using ipfwadm on a RedHat 5.1 system; I
got my firewall configuration file from the firewall design tool at
 http://linux-firewall-tools.com/linux/

I'm assuming that I need to make the external interface be sl0, which is
the one diald listens to, rather than sl1, which is only present when
I'm connected. Things seemed to be working normally when I tested them
on the machine that's running the firewalling, but...

 1. any attempt to access an outside machine from any _other_ host
simply hangs. It's behaving as though DNS packets (at least)
aren't getting forwarded. I'm not running named on my firewall
machine, or rather I'm running it but it's not listed as a
nameserver on any of my machines. Maybe it should be?

 2. DNS requests, even from the firewall machine, don't seem to cause
diald to bring up the connection. They work if the connection is
already up. DNS works fine with diald if I don't set up the
    firewall.

You can do whatever you want to within your machine or LAN, but if you
expect any incoming traffic from the internet, you need an internet IP
recognized by your cable modem provider. Otherwise there will be no
outside routing to your machine.

There are 3rd party DNS services available that could help people connect
to your dynamic IP by name. But you cannot simply make up an IP or
hostname and expect it to work outside of your own little network.

We use .farmgate, Farmgate being the name of the street I and my
roommates live on. Yeah, I'm really creative :) So my machines are
foo.farmgate, bar.farmgate, etc.

I figured that .farmgate, or something else that long, would have a
much lower chance of getting used as a top level domain than a two,
three, or four letter domain, like some of the suggestions in this
thread (.ltd, .lan, .twne).
