Well, it helps most to know which distibution and version you have.
Generally, unless you're running a PC that has BIOS settings for console via
serial port, you can use some type of getty (agetty, or mgetty) to use the
serial port just like the Cisco console, without a reboot due to cable or
serial port problems.
