When you say crashing, i take it your modem locks up, or the terminal in which
your scripts/commands are executed locks up, if that is not the case then your
modem does not crash.

I have one of these (software/emulation) modems in my laptop, it works no
problem. If you use KPPP you can see the logfile online, it might be of some
help.

My laptop is a P111 600 Mhz, if one were to use a lucent modem which uses the
ltmodem.o module with a slow CPU then one could expect problems tho'. or at
least i belive i read that on lucents home page when i installed the driver.
