Sounds funny to me, what i think is that you may not have "kmod" compiled into
your kernel or you do not have an alias defined for the driver and device in
/etc/modules.conf.
Just what would be needed as a alias i dont know. One which comes to mind would
be;
alias scsi_hostadapter on

On the otherhand, why not try the same as you do now but use 'insmod' insted of
modprobe.

This is not much to go on but i hope it helps, it should work you are on the
wright track.
