I have to jump into this NIC thread to say that my impression
is bad card-edge connecting, as described in other messages in
this thread. One of the list group mentioned accumulations of
out-of-tolerances. Dirty contacts were mentioned. I'd have to
begin right there, since it was stated that pushing in on the
card would alleviate the symptoms. I'm no expert, just someone
with a strong inclination to get that much off my chest about
the misbehaving NIC.

Sometimes a ridiculous example serves a purpose, so let's say
you could afford to hire someone cheaply to keep their thumb
on the NIC and hold it in for you when you need ftp transfers.
That would solve the problem, right?

Therefore, having no such person, the trick is to secure a good
connection in some other, more practical manner...
