You might try making these suggestions to the list owner (who, by convention, is [EMAIL PROTECTED]). I doubt if that approach will be successful either, but only he or she can implement the sorts of changes you want. Of the two possibilities you ask for, I suspect the first is the more likely ... but neither is very likely.
Doing something like what Frank suggested is no doubt your best option. It will cause you to lose purely private replies to list messages, though (since for them, linux-newbie will not appear in any header).
