Hello all.
I am running SuSE 8.1 professional and it seems that the fan will not turn on.
The details:
PIII 1.26 GHz 512 MB RAM Sager Laptop
If more info is needed, please specify.
It's hard to know where to begin. Fan activity is *usually* a BIOS issue, not an OS issue. So perhaps the place to start is by asking you why you think the Linux install has anything to do with this problem. And, for that matter, why you believe it is a problem at all (see below).
Although laptops can be funky, with hardware-specific extensions to their as-shipped OSs, the Sager Web site seems to indicate that the base configurations ship with no OS installed (and only Windows choices are mentioned as options) ... so I wouldn't expect something as fundamental to hardware health as fan operation to depend on specifis of the hardware configuration.
In laptops, fans are (usually) not always on. Is it possible that the system is simply running at a light enough load that it is not getting hot enough to cause the fan to start? The discussion here -- http://www.ischo.com/notebook/ -- the destination of a link to info about a "Sager 6500" at http://www.linux.org/hardware/laptop.html (even though the actual text does not mention Sager) -- seems to indicate that it may be that simple ... thus a "feature", not a problem.
Perhaps you will get lucky and find someone here who is familiar with your hardware, but I wouldn't bet on it. So if you post again, please identify the model of your laptop a bit more exactly (I couldn't find anything that *quite* matched the specs you give at the Sager Web site).
