Since I did not hear any further on subject I reinstalled old Kernel and sound 
is back w/o further ado.

Yes I have run sndconfig, hear nothing from the test and get the message:

"AC97 codec does not have proper volume support".

I have rebooted a few time since, as I was trying to fix the problem before 
going to the list.
