XFree86 only tries to use the modelines listed on the "modes" line in the
"screen" section. For instance:
Modes       "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
Make sure the identifiers ("1024x768" "800x600" "640x480") point back at valid
modelines. If you don't know how to set up a working modeline, check out the
document "The Hitchhikers Guide to XFree86 Video Timings" (I think it can be
found at <http://www.ccil.org/~esr/xconfig/video-modes.html> , otherwise, do a
hotbot search)
